Candida Yeast Infection: Everything You Want To Know

Candidiasis infection is caused by a group of microscopic fungi or yeast. There are more than 20 species of Candida, the most common being Candida albicans.A candida yeast infection, is the result of the presence of yeast on the skin, usually on the mucous membranes. While yeast is usually a harmless resident on your body, it can lead to an infection if the skin has been damaged. In damp and warm conditions, or when a person has a compromised immune system, they are more likely to experience a candida yeast infection. In addition, taking antibiotics can promote the growth of yeast. This is because "good bacteria" are killed off, allowing the yeast to flourish unhindered.

Candida symptoms will be different based on where you are infected. Here are some of the symptoms most often associated with a yeast infection. Remember, everyone will experience symptoms in their own way.

If you have an infection in the folds of your skin or navel area, then your symptoms may include a rash, pimples, itching, and burning sensations.

If your infection is in the vagina you may experience a yellow or white discharge resembling cottage cheese, itchiness, red and swollen vulva, and burning.

If you have an infection on the penis, then your symptoms could include redness, scaling, and a rash.

If you experience candida in the mouth, also known as thrush, then you will notice white patchy areas on your tongue and cheeks. It may also be painful.

An infection of the nail beds will result in swelling, pus, a white or yellowish tinge to the nail, pain, and eventual separation of the nail from its base.

Candida symptoms can resemble many different disorders of the skin. You should check with your doctor for an accurate diagnosis before beginning any treatment.

How can candida be diagnosed?
Your doctor will ask for your medical history and perform a physical examination. During the visit, your physician might scrape off a bit of skin sample to look at and confirm their diagnosis of candida by using a microscope or creating a culture.

Candida Treatment
A precise treatment plan for your candidia will be created by the doctor based on:
1. age, medical history and health
2. extent of your candida yeast infection (how long have you had it? how developed is it? how much does it effect you?)
3. how well you tolerate certain medications, procedures, and therapies
4. expectations about the progression of your condition
5. your personal treatment preference

Candida is very treatable with different medicines available from your doctor or over the counter. You can even use at home remedies in some cases. In fact, many of these are available over the counter. Thrush can be eliminated by using lozenges or a medicated mouthwash. Severe infections in an individual with a compromised immune system can get treated with an oral anti-yeast medication.
